I went to a company-sponsored "Long-term weight loss seminar" today. As I was sitting in the room, something was really bothering me: it was the people in the room. They were quiet and attentive. They participated nicely. They knew every bit of the lecture almost as well as the presenter. Because they heard it before. They heard it on the radio. They read about it on the internet. They watched it on TV. I'm sure you heard it before too:
- Reduce calories.
- Eat Healthy.
- Exercise regularly.
- Eat mindfully.
- Take care of yourself.
One hour later I came back to my office, not any closer to a sustainable weight loss then before attending the seminar. Because the principles are missing on the most important question : Why?
Why do you want to lose weight?
To live longer? Why do you want to live longer? Live longer to do what?
To look better? Why do you want to look better? What do you want to do with your looks? Why are they so important?
When you'll die you are going to experience the fastest weight loss ever: you are going to go from 200 lbs to 21 grams. Don't worry you are going to lose all of your pounds eventually. The important question is what to do with them while you still have them. And I can't answer this question for you, but if you know the answer you will come up with a different set of tenets:
- Reduce festivities
- Eat what you're hungry for
- Do something useful regularly
- Live mindfully
- Take care of others
And let the weight loss take care of itself.
